Below is short video of another dog who recently went through our board and train program.  Jackie is a beautiful shepherd from working lines with a lot of energy, drive, and intelligence; enjoy the video!

As you can see, Jackie did a great job while she was with us, we are going to miss her, but I know her owner is excited to have her back!

For those who do not know, Twitter is without a doubt the best way to share and discover what is happening right now!  Following someone on Twitter simply means that you can receive updates of what your friends and family are currently doing; similar to status updates on Facebook, or extremely short blog entries.

Above you can see recent entries of typical thoughts, activities, pictures (there may be some of your dog on there) and other news from us.  Unleashed Unlimited has been on Twitter for some time now, but we have recently started to really use the service as a way of keeping in touch with our clients and friends.  Following us on Twitter is also a great way to see daily pictures (click here to see a few of our most recent ones) and announce any last minute news, such as rain cancellations.  So if you are currently on Twitter, consider following @UnleashUnlim

Agility Weekend

We have been looking forward to our Agility and Disc Dog Weekend for some time now, and it is quickly approaching!!  Cyndy Douan, an agility and disc dog expert, is being brought in by Unleashed Unlimited to teach all of the curriculum for our event.  We could not have asked for a better instructor; she has tons of experience in a wide variety of dog sports, tons of knowledge about dogs, and does similar seminars all over the country.

The main focus of the weekend’s events is going to be agility, Frisbee work, and games!  During the seminar, you and your dog will learn a variety of skills related to agility and disc dogs.  Even if you dog has never been on any agility equipment, Cyndy will show you and your dog how to maneuver through the obstacles (check out this short video shot at our recent Intro to Agility course).  Even if you dog doesn’t currently catch a Frisbee, Cyndy will show you how to build drive in your dog and get them wanting that disc!

The seminar is designed for owners and dogs of all skill levels to learn more about agility and disc dog sports, and have a good time with your dogs!  It is open to dogs of all ages and skill levels, not just advanced dogs or graduates, all you need is an off leash recall and you can start teaching your dog new and fun things.  For complete details on the event, be sure to visit the registration site.

The seminar is going to take place at our Leander Training Center during the weekend of October 24th and 25th, with an optional “Bonus Monday” where Cyndy will be available for semi-private training sessions.  Breakfast and lunch will be served, and good times will be had by all!!

Early registration ends on October 10th, so make sure to sign up soon, the first 10 people to sign up will receive a free Jawz Disc!

Which Crate is Best?

dog crates

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to crates.  Out of all of the different styles of crates available, most people favor either the wire or the plastic ones, but which one is better?  Let’s discuss how each type of crate typically holds up to a few common situations.

Training and Introduction: If you have a young puppy, a wire crate offers an advantage, as most come with a divider to section off the crate, which will be a big help with potty training.  The divider will allow the crate to grow with the dog, meaning you only have to buy one crate and it will be appropriate for all stages of your dog’s life.  A plastic crate simply cannot compete with the versatility of a wire crate in this situation, the winner: Wire Crate

Clean Up: This one can be a tricky one, and it really depends on what you’re cleaning up.  If you are simply cleaning up dirt and hair, you can’t beat the ease of sliding out the bottom pan of a wire crate.  However, if you are cleaning up something a little more messy, you can’t beat the nice deep bottom of a plastic crate.  Plastic crates can also be dragged outside, if needed, much easier than a wire crate, the winner: Plastic Crate

Traveling: Wire crates are great for traveling because they fold flat very easily.  Plastic crates do come apart, and the top and bottom pieces can be placed inside each other to save room, but they do take up more space than a folded wire crate.  However, most/some plastic crates are approved for airline travel, where wire crates are not, the winner: Plastic Crate

Price: Depending on the size of your dog, both the plastic and wire crates aren’t exactly exactly cheap.  However they are worth the money, a good crate should last several years with proper care.  Based on comparing similar sized crates, a plastic crate will usually cost a bit more then a similar sized wire crate, the winner: Wire Crate

As you can see, there are pros and cons to each type of crate.  Depending on the size of your pet and your lifestyle, make sure you get the crate that works best for you and your dog.

Boarding and Training with Lucy

Here is a short video of Lucy, a GSP that has just completed our Austin Board and Train Program.

Lucy has come a long way in a short time.  In addition to all of the basic obedience that we worked on with Lucy, she now understands how to behave in the home (no jumping on counters or the furniture, etc.).  We are going to miss Lucy, but we know her family is going to be excited to see her again!
