2010 Most Popular Dog Breeds

Posted by Paul - January 28, 2010 - Blog, The General Dog Community

If you are looking for the AKC list of the Most Popular Dog Breeds that was released on January 26, 2011, click here!

The AKC recently announced their annual list of the top ten most popular dog breeds in America.  Some of the list may surprise you, but others may not.  Check out the list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds.

10.  Shih Tzu

9.  Poodle

8.  Dachshund

7.  Bulldog

6.  Boxer

5.  Beagle

4.  Golden Retriever

3.  Yorkshire Terrier

2.  German Shepherd

1.  Labrador Retriever

What do you think it is about the Labrador that makes them extremely popular year after year?  Is it their size, personality, versatility, cultural viewpoint, or something else?

As the owner of a Labrador (that is my dog Boomer pictured above) I chose the breed because of the high energy level and the ability to excel is many different disciplines (obedience, field work, dock dogs, etc).  For those of you with Labs, and those of you who don’t have Labs, what is your input; why did you chose the breed you did?

Labs are very obedient, smart, active, and fun. They can come in many colors. My lab happens to be a red fox (a very pretty color.)

I have a lab/pit bull mix. I grew up w labs. Great family dogs, very smart, and there’s a huge bond you feel very soon after getting them. Maybe how they need your love and not so to them selves.. But pit bulls are amazing too! I rescued my labrabull I think he’s the best dog I’ve ever had! I had a beagle named boomer, lives w my mom now

i own a goldenr retriever and a border collie and a lab and a pitbull and one thing i dont understand why dont they put the border collie in this list, they’re very smart and intellegent and loyal but maybe a bit distructive but they are still great dogs and the pitbull should be atleast number ten, they are great dogs if you treat them right and i think that golden retrievers should be first on this list, labs are great and they’re almost the same as golden retrievers but golden retrievers are less hyper and easier to train and are cuter xD

I’ve had German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, Wire-haired Fox Terriers and finally Beagles.
German Shepherds are of course, simply awesome but I absolutely swear by my two Beagles, Mr. Monk and LuLu. They are the most devoted, loving, sweet wonderful dogs I think I have ever owned.

In my family we have 4 Labs, and a little wanna-be (Peki-Shih.) Have ALWAYS had labs. To me there is no better breed, they can do so many things that other breeds are specially bred for: they guard, they detect drugs, bodies and bombs, they are GREAT family dogs and love just about everyone that they meet (within reason), they are playful when you want them to be and mellow and hard working the rest of the time, they are great hunting dogs as well as doing what they were bred for fishing. All I know is that if I didn’t have a lab in my life, I’d probably not be the person I am. The labs that we have are 1 chocolate who is the mother of the 1 ivory, and 2 blacks (mother and son) the male black is the half-brother to the ivory. And soon we are expecting another litter from the black female.

I love ACD or Blue heelers. They are the most devote dogs i have ever had and super smart. My females takes good care of my kids and never misses a step they take. They dont call them “velcro” dogs for nothing! “:)
