Upcoming Fall Classes

Sep 29, 2011   //   by Paul   //   No Comments

The weather here in Austin is finally starting to maybe think about cooling down for just a bit, and it’s a great time to do something new with your dog!  In addition to our regular dog training classes in Austin, we are adding two more extra curricular classes to our fall schedule.

Things are going to get real smelly starting on October 15th!  Check out K9 Scent Games which focuses on teaching you different games and scenarios that can be used to encourage your dog’s natural scenting abilities.  By utilizing our dog’s search skills, we build confidence, burn off mental and physical energy, and a positive working relationship that develops between you and your dog when you both are out “hunting” together as a team.

If Scent Games isn’t your thing, check out our latest installment of Trick Training.  Teaching your dog new tricks is a great opportunity to kick back and have some fun and by exposing your dog to new instruction, you’re actually making it easier for them to learn new things later down the road – and it’s a lot of FUN!!  Tricks 2 (Tricks 1 is not a prerequisite for this class) begins on October 27th!!

Click on the following links to sign up or learn more about our Trick Training and K9 Scent Games classes.  Hope to see you out there!!!

Continuing Education, Again

Sep 6, 2011   //   by Tracey   //   1 Comment

In a few weeks I will be heading out of state to attend a continuing education conference in Iowa.  Epalooza is an annual event sponsored by That’s My Dog! that brings together professionals from a variety of different backgrounds in the dog world.  As with every year, the lineup of speakers is excellent and the topics being discussed promise to be extremely beneficial.  Some of the topics of this years conference include first aid for your pet, dealing with canine aggression, current trends in training equipment, and lots more!  Not only am I excited to open myself up to soak  in new information, but I’m excited to reunite with old friends and meet some new ones as well.

Continuing education is important in all professions, just as it’s important to your dog.  Dogs that are constantly being taught new things are able to learn easier, and it keeps them fresh leaves them with a sense of purpose.  If you are looking to teach your dog some new things, check out our Austin Agility Seminar or have a mini training session at home tonight, do some trick training, or enroll your dog into some other type of learning activity.  Remember, mental stimulation is just as important for your dog as physical exercise!  If you’re not sure how to properly exercise your dog’s mind, start by getting them into a great Austin dog training class!

Be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook Fan Page and Twitter account as I will be posting pictures and updates from the conference.

K9 Scent Games

Apr 30, 2011   //   by Paul   //   No Comments

All of the dogs had a blast during our last installment of K9 Scent Games (some photos can be found here), so we’re doing it again!!  K9 Scent Games is all about using your dog’s sense of smell and  natural desire to hunt, and putting those skills to the test.

Our K9 Scent Games classes focus on teaching you different games and scenarios  that can be used to encourage your dog’s natural scenting abilities.  The fun classes are based on authentic scent detection training and the drills and scenarios will range from basic confidence building set ups to complex scenarios that might even leave you scratching your head.

The curriculum in our classes promotes a positive, fun and motivationally-based methodology.  By utilizing our dog’s search skills, we build confidence, burn off mental and physical energy, and a positive working relationship that develops between you and your dog when you both are out “hunting” together as a team.

This class will be held on weeknights at our Leander Dog Training facility starting on Tuesday, May 24th, at 7pm.  Registration information can be found here, or you’re welcome to contact us with any questions.  Any and all ages, breeds, and obedience levels are welcome to join in, so come on out and get smelly with us!

Austin Snake Avoidance Training

Apr 18, 2011   //   by Paul   //   No Comments

We all know that Austin is a very dog-friendly city – numerous hiking trails, restaurants, and dog parks are scattered throughout the area.  With all of the benefits that the area offers our dogs, it also hosts a few dangers as well; we are specifically talking about snakes!!

One may have been spotted on a trail, you’ve seen one dead on the side of the road, or maybe you’ve spotted one right in your backyard; I can imagine that all of us, directly or indirectly, has our very own snake story.  Hopefully all of the stories end with no one getting bit or injured.  As with a lot of our training, we’re advocating prevention as opposed to damage control.  So, on Saturday, May 14th at 11:30 am at our Leander dog training facility we will be hosting a snake avoidance session.

We will be bringing in a trainer who specializes in teaching dogs to avoid and stay away from snakes.  There will be a rattlesnake, a water moccasin, and a copperhead present to best teach the dogs avoidance.  The snakes are alive but have been either devenomized or other precautions have been taken so that no dogs will be in any danger during the training session.  The cost for the snake proofing session is $60 per snake per dog; you can choose to have your dog trained on all three or just one or two.

To schedule your appointment time, contact Tracey at 512-618-8064.  You must pre-register and payment is due on the day of the event.  Feel free to contact us with any questions.
