Greatest American Dog: My Thoughts

After watching the first episode of CBS’s Greatest American Dog, I have to say that I am a bit disappointed in the show.  Maybe I was the only one, but I was hoping for more of a show that highlighted cool things that people can do with their dogs, as opposed to a costume ball filled with editing room created drama.

I know reality shows are not reality and the goal of the show is to entertain viewers, and not to actually find the Greatest American Dog, but if the goal actually was to find the G.A.D., I would hope that the talent pool would be much deeper.  I don’t see how the producers could have allowed most of these dogs onto the show, most of them don’t even have a solid recall.

I am not a negative person, nor am I claiming to be the world’s greatest dog trainer or have the world’s greatest dog, but I can guarantee that our dogs, as well as most of our clients dogs, could beat the dogs on the show at any given challenge.  That is a big statement, regardless of me being smug or just confident, but I actually believe it to be true.  You can decide for yourself by checking out some of our videos.

Alright, so the show is not focused around training dogs, that’s fine.  One thing that I do like about the show is that it highlights the deep bond between dogs and their owners, something in which we can all relate.  When all is said and done, recall or no recall, owning dogs is all about the irreplaceable bond that exists between us and them, and that is reality.

What were your expectations of the show, and now what are your thoughts?  We would love to hear from everyone, feel free to leave your thoughts in the form of a comment.

    • I just wanted to say that the courage and the stunt dog episode was inexcuseable. The only ones that showed any sense and bond with their dog was Bill and Laurie. These dogs were not trained to do these difficult stunts and thus Galaxy suffered an injury. A big BOO!!!! to the judges for allowing this to happen. You would have thought they would have had more sense. They always talk humane treatment, well Hello, did you sleep through this episode. An elephant, come one, talk about confusing your pet. That show was not about courage, only dominance. I hope Galaxy is ok that should not have happened if anyone there had any sense. Sorry to Bill, Star has so much heart and the bond between them is wonderful. He should not have gone home, nobody should have in that episode, call it bad judgement and start over.

    • I agree. Some things done on show have been bad but this was the worst. It in no way shows who has the best dog. Hope Galaxy is OK.

    • With each episode I become more and more disillusioned with the show. You claim to have dog experts as judges, but I believe all they exhibit is “bad judgement” by standing at the podium with their pompous sneers and smirks. We are talking about “dogs” and their contributions to society, not whether they can sit- stay as a 9000 lb. elephant charges them. You tell me that a dog should be penalized for not jumping off a tower!?!Each dog who refused has more common sense than the whole show line-up. I hope that Galaxy is able to recover. Shame on the whole lot of you. Cesar Millan has it all over you opportunists

    • I was greatly dissapointed that Bill and Star were dq’ed last week, they have a special bond and if Bill didnt think that Star was able or for what reason to go up the steep ramp then he had the right to make that decision. Look at Galaxy, I hope he will be fine. I cant take when an animal is hurt.

    • I was excited at first to see a show about dogs and their owners with all the bogus reality shows on now, but I am VERY disapointed at some of the stunts that the so called experts are allowing, especially since they feel the need to bash at least one owner and dog each showing. Not only was the elephant stunt unsafe in so many ways, but do to reality shows we have seen so many times that elephants can be unpredictable and to put the dogs in such a dangerous situation is truly unprofessional and a cheap stunt to get ratings. I will be watching the last show out of curiosity to see who wins, but I hope someone who has the access to the shows producers will bring to their attention some of these concerns.

    • I was so glad that Pressley took the Greatest American Dog. I had a boxer that looked and acted just like Pressley his name was Bosco. I rescued his Mother and 7 other pups in 2002 and found homes for all except for him and he adopted us. He was diagnosed on Jan 1, 2008 with Boxer Cardiomyopathy. He died in my arms on June 9 2008. I watched every show and cried. Pressley had so much personality, and wanted to please. I think the judges made the right decision, at 16 months old he was the best!

    • Hey Karen, are you from Iowa? Your story sounds really familiar.

    • Oh and I am also extremely happy that Preslet won! Way to go Presley!!!
