If You Could Only Pick 2…

Posted by Paul - March 7, 2010 - Blog, The General Dog Community, Tips for Owning and Training Dogs

I’m sure we have all heard the term less is more.  So staying with that theme, if you could only pick two skills to teach your dog (any two skills at all), what would you teach and why?

Feel free to leave your responses in the comment area of this post, and in our next post I will post and explain my answer and discuss some of the other submissions as well.

EDIT: the second part to this post can be found here.

Come and off because most problems can be solved using those words.

I would choose “come”, and “sit” because “sit” also means “stay” and “come” allows me to retreive the dog from a distance. Since Ophelia was a dog that would bolt and run away, these two seem to me to be the two basic commands that allow me to control my dog and keep her safe, e.g., not running into the street.

“Beer” and “Lotto”. Most things can be solved by those two items.

Seriously, I would have to agree with Jeff. Re-direct actions with “sit” and “come” can accomplish so many things. At least that’s what MY trainers taught me….

Place and come without a doubt!!! we can get that dog to do just about anything. With a new baby in the house “place” is Awesome!!!! We miss training Dodge with you guys. Maybe life will slow down a bit now.

Elmo’s best commands are “place” and “come”. Without those, there is no control. But I think he enjoys taking a bite best of all! LOL

I don’t want to teach my kids “beer”. They’ll drink it all!
